“I work with what I see directly: landscapes encountered while traveling or in everyday life, people in themselves and within these spaces. In a landscape I am interested in how space feels — its rhythm, air, light. In a portrait I try to capture the characteristic presence of a person. Color and technique are most often suggested by intuition.
Photography captures only one layer of reality. In painting and drawing (which I do not strictly separate), it is important for me to add to the factual layer the magical one — the layer born from memory, associations, and personal experience. The factual remains the same, but it is the ‘magical’ state that determines the composition, the material, the focus.
In a way, I am a pinhole camera: I look long and honestly, and I record reality. Intuition and my inner archive of images set the settings; my task is to choose where to place this ‘camera’ and which state to capture”
